Cyclists' Touring Club (CTC)

alt

As the UK's National Cyclists' Organisation, the CTC  has been protecting and promoting the rights of cyclists since 1878. The CTC is a not-for-profit organisation that is funded through its membership and donations. It campaigns nationally and locally on issues of importance to cyclists.  The CTC has around 60,000 members encompassing all ages and types of cyclists with elected representatives at national and local level backed by a professional staff. Nationally, CTC provides members with touring and technical advice, legal aid and insurance, and a bi-monthly magazine “Cycle”.

CTC South Hampshire

CTC South Hampshire is the local CTC group for the area covered by the SO postcode. It organises a range of cycling activities and is divided into 2 informal groups: CTC Southampton and CTC Winchester.

CTC Winchester

CTC Winchester organises on-road and occasional off-road cycle rides. It offers the following rides (for a full list of rides see the current Events Programme):

  • Easy rides (1/2 day afternoon ride or short day ride) at leisurely pace on 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.
  • Intermediate ride on either 3rd or 5th Saturday of each month. Distance about 50 miles at a pace midway between the easy rides and the Sunday rides.
  • Sunday rides: Ride every Sunday at a faster pace, either 1/2 day or full day. If 1/2 day, it usually includes an option to continue for a full day and if full day, it incorporates a 1/2 day group who ride to the morning stop and return to Winchester by lunchtime. For this part of the ride, the group normally splits into a faster and medium-paced group with both groups riding to the same stop.
  • Wednesday evening rides (April to September). Rides of about 25 miles at a pace similar to the Sunday rides with an optional pub stop.

CTC Southampton

CTC Southampton organises the following rides and events:

  • Full day rides on Sunday. For full details see current events programme.
  • Clubroom meets every Tuesday 8.00 - 10.00 pm Chilworth Community Centre (behind church) OS 185 GR 407 188
  • Evening rides in Summer

Romsey "Hares and Tortoises"

Part of CTC Southampton, the Hares and Tortoises are a group for those who see themselves as hares who prefer to sleep in the sun, or determined tortoises.

Meet at Palmerston’s statue, central Romsey at 10am on the 1st Saturday of each month for all-day ride, and at 2pm for tea-rides on 3rd Saturday of each month between April and October and starting at 1.30 pm from November to March.

Rides are led at an average pace of 9 to 10 mph. Hills are ridden at each individuals’ own pace or walked if needed. All-day rides are about 35 to 40 miles and tea-rides about 17 to 25 miles. We lunch in a pub and the tea rides have a tea stop. We also do some ‘specials’ such as weekend and car-assisted trips, e.g.  Isle of Wight and west of Salisbury. Very occasionally we start in Romsey at 9.30 am for a longer trip at an easy pace. Check Viv Mackay (see contacts page) if you have not been before.

Other rides

CTC South Hampshire also organises challenge events, not races but longer faster rides to test both fitness and navigating skills. See Events page for details.

CTC Hampshire Cycling

CTC Hampshire Cycling is a campaigning group with representatives throughout Hampshire. For details of campaigning in Southampton and Winchester contact John Edwards (see contacts page).
