CTC Southampton
See below for current program.
Although we call ourselves CTC Southampton, we are widely based in the surrounding district. We run weekly Sunday leisure rides, summer evening rides and weekends away, and some social events. Some of our rides are joint with Winchester. Most are on road but we occasionally venture off-road, especially in the drier summer months.
Our Sunday rides are designed to take in some of the wonderful scenery in the local area, such as the New Forest, South Downs, the Test, Itchen and Meon valleys or venturing further afield to Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex or Berkshire. The emphasis is on a pleasant day awheel in good company. The group has four different meeting points, Redbridge, Romsey, Chilworth and West End (see below) according to the day’s destination. We meet at 9am for a 9.10 start, with a stop for coffee mid-morning and lunch in a country pub. Thereafter, we make our way home with an optional stop for tea mid-afternoon aiming to arrive home by 4 to 5pm. For those who do not wish to stay out all day, there is the option to return after coffee. We usually cover 40-60 miles in the winter months and perhaps 60-80 miles in summer. We have a number of very experienced ride leaders who know the area and the best cycling routes well. As these are pleasure rides, they are led at a modest pace with the intention that no one feels pressured to ride faster than they wish.
Recently, we have started half-day rides to cater for those wishing to return home for lunch, and as an introduction to club riding for newer riders or those who have not ridden with a club before and want to see what it has to offer.
Our meeting points are:
MGR West End, junction of Botley Road and Moorgreen Road, OS196 GR474144
RED The Ship, Test Lane, Old Redbridge Road, OS185 GR370137
CHL Chilworth Roundabout, Romsey Road, OS185 GR419175
ROM The Plaza, Romsey, OS 185 GR 358213

Southampton Clubroom
We hold clubroom meets every Wednesday 8.00-10.00 pm at Chilworth Community Centre, Fowlers Walk (behind the church, grid reference OS 185 GR 407 188). These are social occasions, sometimes featuring slide shows, talks, maintenance evenings, wine and cheese evenings, etc. We also hold occasional Saturday maintenance mornings at the clubroom, designed to give people the confidence to deal with routine problems like punctures, gear and brake adjustment, etc. These are usually arranged to coincide with a Hares & Tortoises tea ride in the afternoon.
Thursday Evening Rides
Starting in May, we aim to take advantage of the finer and lighter summer evenings, meeting at 7pm and riding out to a pleasant country pub, typically about 10-15 miles away. Don’t forget to bring lights! |
