Our Rides
Easy/Intermediate Rides on Saturday
Saturday rides are relaxed occasions with time to chat and enjoy the scenery as we thread our way out into the countryside. The group meets by the toilets in the Winchester Hotel car park on Worthy Lane – practical, if not especially picturesque! The three different formats each month attract up to 20 riders from Winchester, and we usually get an even mix of women and men.
-
Afternoon rides are a great introduction to the group, especially if you’re anxious about keeping up. We average 9 – 11 mph but the ride will be geared to the speed of the slowest. There’s always a stop for tea and cakes, and we’re usually back in Winchester before 5pm after completing 12 - 20 miles.
-
Easy day rides follow a similar pattern, riding at the same gentle pace (9 – 11 mph). However, with a full day out we can venture further afield, covering perhaps 30 - 40 miles. We stop for morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea, so you’ll rarely ride for more than ten miles without a break.
-
Intermediate rides are all-day events aimed at cyclists who want to go a little further and slightly faster (10 mph – 12 mph). We start slightly earlier and so we can extend our range to 50 – 60 miles.
Moderate/Faster rides on Sunday
The Sunday rides start from Alfred’s Statue in Winchester’s Broadway. They are aimed at the more experienced cyclist and usually start at 8.30 am or 9am am depending upon the time of year.
For the ride to coffee, we split into two groups: a moderate group averaging between 13 mph and 14 mph and a faster group averaging 15 mph – 17 mph.
The Sunday rides can be either ½ day or full day.
For those seeking a ½ day ride, we again split into two groups for the return leg with the aim of getting back into Winchester by lunch The faster group will have ridden about 45 – 55 miles and the moderate group about 35 – 45 miles. For those seeking a full day ride the ride continues at the pace of the moderate group to a lunch destination and gets back into Winchester between 4.30 pm and 5.30 pm depending upon whether we stop for tea. The full day option is about 65 miles – 85 miles depending upon the time of year.
Sunday rides may be faster and further but there is still plenty of time to chat and look at the scenery.
Moderate/Faster Rides on Wednesday evenings
Throughout the summer, we organise our popular evening rides. They start at 7pm from King Alfred’s Statue in the Broadway. As on Sundays, there’s a choice of moderate and faster paced rides, this time meeting up at a rural pub between 8.15 and 8.30 pm. Here there’s the option of stopping for a drink and/or food, or riding straight back to Winchester and getting back between 9 pm and 9.30 pm
The ride home is usually shorter and the moderate group will have ridden 25- 30 miles at an average speed of 13-14mph, with the faster riders completing a few extra miles at a faster 15-17mph. Whichever option you pick, lights are essential.
